Reaching Lachen to explore Gurudongmar

Day 1: Gangtok to Lachen – The Road to the Clouds -Morning: Start early from Gangtok, winding through emerald valleys, terraced fields, and forested hills. The Teesta River will keep you company, its turquoise waters sparkling in the sunlight.

En Route Stops:

Seven Sisters Waterfall – cascading ribbons of water tumbling down rocky cliffs.
Naga Falls – a refreshing stop before the mountains rise higher.

Afternoon:

The road narrows as you enter the higher ranges, where prayer flags flutter in the crisp air. Pine-scented breezes greet you as you reach Lachen by late afternoon.

Evening:

Lachen is a peaceful Himalayan hamlet, often wrapped in mist. Spend the night in a cozy homestay or lodge, enjoying a warm local meal and the stillness of the high mountains.

Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake & Back

Day 2: Pre-dawn Start: Leave Lachen before sunrise for the drive to Gurudongmar Lake. The higher you go, the landscape changes from green valleys to barren, windswept plateaus.

The Journey Up:

Snow peaks rise dramatically, yaks graze lazily, and the cold gets sharper. Every turn feels like a new painting.

Gurudongmar Lake (17,800 ft):

One of the world’s highest lakes, shimmering like a sapphire under the sun.
Sacred to Buddhists, Sikhs, and Hindus — its waters are believed to never completely freeze.

Return:

Drive back to Lachen for breakfast, then proceed towards Gangtok, carrying with you the memory of the lake’s surreal beauty.

Recommended Timing :

Depart very early, ideally between 2:30–3:00 AM from Lachen to reach in daylight.
Permit checkpoints require arrival at Giaogong Army post.
